Ten Tips to Writing Good Web Content

There is plenty to think about when writing good quality website content. In this blog we are going to give you some simple pointers on how to produce quality web content for your websites.

1 – Write to the readers

When writing the content to any website you should always write to the people who are reading it. The personal touch is something that is always appreciated and if your website is advertising a service or product then it will work a dream. People like to think that websites are aimed at them.

2 – Simplicity

Keep text simple. Complicated is not good, especially for those who are looking for a specific purpose from your website. The text should, as hinted at in the previous point, be more like dialect with the person viewing it, so don’t start using complicated English.

3 – Headings

Break down your text into headings. The last thing a reader wants to see is a massive chunk of text. It is immediately off putting. Stand out, bold headings are a brilliant way to avoid this. The reason being is often you are looking for something specific and bold headings on a page can often help navigate the reader to what they’re looking for.

4 – Get to the Point

Don’t write a story building up to what the service the site actually offers. Write a summary in the first paragraph, effectively telling people what they are going to find out and then tempt them to read on. People have short attention spans, so a lot of the time they are only going to take in the first paragraph, which is why it is important that the main message is in there.

5 – Lists in 7

Following on from the previous point, a lot of websites tend to use bullet pointed lists to get their message across, which has proven to be successful. But make sure you don’t go overboard. The maximum amount of points you should use in any list is 7. This is based on studies that the human memory only has the ability to hold on to 7 thoughts at one given time

6 – Links

When you are writing text for a website it is always a good to integrate links. This is very good for SEO reasons. For instance you could be offering a web marketing service like we do at www.barsbank.com/website-marketing, so including a link to certain relevant areas of the site can often help increase page visits and potential business.

7 – Proof Read

Always proof read what you are about to publish on your website. We have all been guilty of the odd typo here and there or bad grammar. Our standard practice here at Barsbank is to proof read our content three times. This is because to proof read it once you are likely to skim it and miss something. A second time will pick up more mistakes but still miss others and the third time we get someone else in the office to read it because as the writer you are staring at the same screen for a set period of time and therefore will miss things that someone who is looking at it fresh won’t.

8 – Relevance

Keep your content relevant to what you are advertising. Remember that people have searched for you to read about the subject that they are interested in. So the last thing they want is to get to your site and find out that you are writing about something completely different. Relevance is also important to ad rank. So if you want high search engine positioning, keep it relevant.

9 – Consider SEO

SEO is important to any website and we have discussed what you need to consider in terms of SEO, in my previous SEO hints blog. These hints apply strongly to writing good content.

10 – Layout

Keep consistency to the layout of your content. It’s no good having your text all over the page with no structure. Try and keep things consistent. For example, if the first sub headed text has three lines of text, then make sure the following sub headings do as well, and so on. Things like font should also be consistent throughout the page.

Overall it pays to write good, consistent, relevant and quality content for your website. It is often a good idea to get a professional to write it for you. This is one of the great services we can offer. To enquire about this or any other the great services Barsbank offer, Contact Us now.
